Helen Macpherson Smith Trust is an independent philanthropic trust established by Helen Macpherson Schutt (née Smith) in 1951. On her passing in 1951, Helen left £275,000, the majority of her wealth, to establish a perpetual philanthropic trust to benefit Victorian charitable institutions. Launched as the Helen M. Schutt Trust, the name was changed to the Helen Macpherson Smith Trust in 2001 to acknowledge the Macpherson and Smith families as the prime source of her legacy.

Since the Trust was established, over $130 million has been approved in grants to a wide range of Victorian charitable institutions and a diverse range of projects benefiting Victorians. The trust has a focus on a range of charitable programs, including Education and support for the Community..

You will work collaboratively with the CEO and team to drive and deliver the strategic and operational goals of HMST’s philanthropic contributions. You will have the opportunity to contribute to the development and execution of the grants strategy and related policies. With the ability to use your knowledge and experience, you will welcome the prospect of identifying, implementing and improving efficiencies across all granting and office processes.

Applying your technical grant making expertise you will manage and administer all aspects of the grant making process, seek out new potential projects and areas of need within the community whilst maintaining open and trusted relationships with existing grantees for the Trust.

Your success in the role will be driven by your:

  • Technical grant making expertise
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a small team
  • Excellent project management skills
  • Strong organisational and time management skills
  • Demonstrated capacity to work independently and take initiative
  • Analytical, research and evaluation skills
  • Ability to attend to the fine details
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to consult and work effectively with a wide range of external stakeholders, including other philanthropic organisations and government
  • Strong Microsoft Office Skills and ideally Blackbaud Grant Making or similar database software

This is a very exciting opportunity to be a part of the transformation and change the Trust is embarking on. If you would like to work in a progressive, professional philanthropic organisation that is steeped in history – this is a perfect opportunity to do so. Ideally you will have a degree or higher qualification (Masters or equivalent) and experience in the Not For Profit sector.
